Set in Whitney Pier and Mount Pleasant, Cape Breton, in the mid 1920s, thirteen-year old Kate, along with her twelve–year old brother Michael, struggled to keep their family together. Their Momma suffered from consumption (TB) and Poppa was an alcoholic. Four younger brothers and sisters were more than a handful for Kate and Michael.
Aunts, uncles, and Gramma attempted to help, but their efforts often seemed interfering. Kate’s friend, Grace, offered the kind of support and encouragement she needed to help deal with both heartbreak and tragedy. In the end, Kate's prayers were probably answered but not at all in the way she expected.
